Ocean

This word, spiritually, according to the sutras of the Buddha and lineages of teachers,  applies to this universe as an ocean of pain and suffering for the infinite numbers of sentient beings who live in it.

We all, human, animal, and spirits, have physical, mental, emotional and spiritual pain and suffering.

The cause of this is our delusion in the way we perceive, think, and emotionally react to this phenomenal world.

This basic delusion or ignorance escalates into attachment, aversion, pride, , jealousy, fear, anxiety, depression and thousands of other neurotic and psychotic states of thinking, speaking, and activity.

The medicinal antidote to all this is ultimately apparent to those human beings who have developed awareness through the spiritual practices of meditation, or insight.

The result of developing awareness is to penetrate the illusory nature of this ocean of pain and transform it into an ocean  of bliss.

This happens by applying the antidote of awareness itself to everything we sense, believe, or think about and remove the emotional involvement with the self, I, or ego.

This spontaneously redirects all this energy in positive way to benefit others still floundering in this ocean of suffering.

This method of altruistic compassion and ultimate awareness, working together is beyond delusions and it is called enlightenment.

The 5 Senses

In tantric vajrayana mahayana buddhist practice, the intrinsic five wisdom aspects of our mind are experienced as natural mind.

The five elements as the natural world, and our five senses as vital offerings of light energy to the natural mind and natural world in union, or inseparable.

The sense of taste is the essence of the earth.

The hearing is the essence of air.

The sight is the essence or radiance ( fire).

The touch is the essence of water.

And the smell is the essence of space.

These five senses and their objects are continually offered in ritual practice with mantras, mudras and meditation, using visualizations of mandalas of light and all sentient beings as light bodies or deities in pure boundless space, non self.

Practicing in this way, one should have no attachment to this process of valuing voidness or non self as mahamudra, the great view.

Purpose

The purpose of all spiritual practice is to develop in this human condition these four qualities:

unconditional love

altruistic compassion

insight or wisdom

and emotional stability or equanimity.

The four thoughts that inspire us to do this are 1.  That we have a valuable human birth and that we should make it precious by benefitting others and our environment.

2.  We have karmic inclinations of mind, body, and speech.  We should strive to make them always positive and loving.

3. We are impermanent in this body, as is everything.  We should prepare for the eventuality of aging, sickness, death, and our next life.

4.  We all suffer from having a form with sensual perceptions, thinking, emotional responses and habitual inclination to dramatize everything. This causes one physical, mental, and emotional pain.

Each day we start our spiritual practice by contemplating the four thoughts as the purpose to do our spiritual practice in order to evolve into a a perfect human being.

This is best thought of as like a mother’s involvement with her only child.  All beings are our mothers.

Alternatives

Religious cults, government agencies, corporate and commercial interests, the military complex,  and various social for profit and non profit groups dictate what you can own, where you can live, what you can eat, drink, and smoke, what you can believe in, what information you can have access to, who you can marry.

In fact, every facet of your life including dying and death is dictated.

What are the alternatives to all of these mandates, laws, rules,  commands, directives, withholdings and regulations?

The answer is quite simple, one must decide to become a sovereign entity and start to think outside the box of all these controlling influences.

This is accomplished by training the mind to relax and focus on its ultimate true nature and then integrate this into ones everyday activities.

Soon by this simple process, a person can remove themselves from the loop of judgmental mind and live in harmony with others and nature.

In this way one can become truly human, mature and free of these obstacles and intrusions of others that are preventing one from becoming enlightened and of benefit to others.

This is as rebellious as I could get today after watching world events.

Bodhicitta “The Key” ~Pure Mind and Pure Motive

The key to lasting happiness in the practice of mahayana buddhism is this two fold practice that leads to enlightenment.

First, our pure motive is that all sentient beings  are to be removed from states of pain and suffering.

Sentient beings are animals, spirits, and humans.

Of these three, humans are the only group that can at this time become buddhas.

We make every effort to alleviate their pain and show them how to discipline their minds, speech, and bodies, in order to become free of the emotional loop they have placed themselves in called samsara.

The second aspect of bodhicitta is to always remember that this universe is illusory and that every one is only light and energy and that all this drama is like a dream.

We are to put this ultimate truth into our relative situation though constant practice in meditation, then mix that into all of our every day activities 24 hours a day, seven days a week, right through dying, death of the body, and our next life.

Remember that the benefit of this to all beings is based on unconditional love, altruistic compassion, insight and emotional stability.

Yoga and the Breath

Conscious breathing is called “prana yoga”.

It is the most important preliminary practice of all yoga and meditation sessions.

It is very good for physical health as it greatly bolsters the immune system.

For a beginner, simply sit comfortably in a chair with your feet flat  on the floor,  or cross-legged on a cushion.

1.  Back straight

2.  Head slightly tilted forward

3.  Eyes open to view space, softly gaze 2 feet in front of eyes.  Don’t look at your nose or the floor.

4.  Hands in lap or resting on the knees

5.  Mouth closed

Take a natural full breath into lungs and diaphragm expanding, then exhale, this is counted as one breath.

Watch yourself doing this for a minute or two, then count ten breaths, at the end of the 10th count stop counting and again simply watch your breath for one or two minutes.

Next, start the count again and go to ten.  Do this five times.  Then relax and watch your thoughts with no emotional involvement.

Stay alert, stay present, not too tight, not too loose.

If one experiences “non thought” do not attach to the bliss of that experience.

Relaxed awareness is the ultimate medicine.  No more meditation will be the end result.

This is mind training mind to become ego “less”.

Post meditation practice is to mix this training in awareness with all daily (and nightly) activities.

Have compassion for your thoughts.

All living beings are your mothers and life support group.  Ah women !

Peace

Peace is a state of mind that produces a medicinal or spiritual effect, which is the end to emotional conflict or unrest.

In the practice of meditation, we arrive at this experience through various techniques.

We call this nirvana or enlightenment.

The trick is not to become attached to our spiritual practice or it’s results.

Through mind training and discipline, the final goal is not peace, but is to remove  all emotional involvement  with  what you think and the attachment to the male or female form body.

We extend this result altruistically to all beings and the environment.

This, of course, takes time and practice.  But since we are immortal what’s the hurry?

The end result is Buddahood; the end of all pain and suffering.
